|
Lake Saumatre is a picturesque lake, which is the second largest lake on the Island of Hispaniola, just after the Enriquillo Lake. The neighboring country Dominican Republic, call this lake as Lago del Fondo. It has brackish water and is considered as a twin of Lake Enriquillo. Bordering Dominican Republic, this lake has an approximate area of 65 square miles (168 square kilometer). It is a part of nearby chain of saline lakes, and it is positioned in the arid part of the rift valley Cul-de-Sac. Several nearby spots are located below sea level, as this region was a marine strait earlier. During the heavy rainfall Lake Saumatre merges with the neighbouring lake Xaragua or Enriquillo of Dominican Republic. The eastern part of Lake Saumatre has fresh water while the western part has saline water. It is also fed by springs emanating from calcareous rocks. The average salinity of lake is reported to be 15 percent. It does not have surface outlet and it is landlocked. Lake Saumatre is created with a depression of 16 kilometers and 4 kilometers wide. During the heavy rainfall the water level of the lake rises up to 7 feet. Lake Saumatre is a perfect travel spot which has marshes and small fresh water springs on the western shores and mudflats, shallow lagoons and sandy shore line on the eastern shore. |
