Flora and Fauna of Haiti

floraTo explore Haiti, one also needs to delve into the forests and national parks to experience the wildlife and know about the flora and fauna of the country. The geographical position plays a major role in the wildlife of the country. One can see the sights of pine forests, mangroves and many other wildlife destinations to know more about the flora and fauna of the country.

Haitian wildlife is mainly dominated by the Camains and Flamingos. The other animals noticed in Haiti are the white-winged ground warbler, Hispaniolan trogon and the grey-crowned palm tanager. Initially Haiti had many forests where there many animals could be spotted but due to deforestation Haiti has lost many of its native and important forests. The wildlife nowadays can only be spotted in the pine forests and the semi desert areas.

The coral reefs are also home for a traced amount of wildlife. In the tropical coral reefs certain animals can be spotted. But that is also under threat due to excessive soil erosion and silting. The wildlife that is left behind is preserved in the national parks in Haiti. La Visite National Park and the Pic Macaya National Park are the two popular national parks. The former is 22 kilometers from Port au Prince and the latter being located in the massif de la Hotte Mountain range in the southern region of the country.

The flora of the country is divided into four eco-regions namely the Hispaniolan moist forest, Hispaniolan pine forests, Enriquillo Wetlands and the Greater Antilles mangroves. Hispaniolan moist forest extends from eastern region and the northern region of the country and has approximately 335 plant species. The Enriquillo Wetlands has the largest lake in Haiti, Saumatre Lagoon. These eco-regions are home to some of the exotic species of plants and animals.

Even though the environment of Haiti has faced many threats like deforestation, floods, cyclone and many other natural disasters, the country still is a place with rich flora and fauna and is a treat to the eyes.
